Good raves have the power to be so much more than conventional nightlife. At underground gatherings, time stops as we're liberated from the mundane: love triumphs over fleeting, alcohol-fueled encounters, and a sense of peace washes away the sea of unfamiliar faces and hawk-eyed security found at most nightclubs. Perhaps then, a good rave is closer to a church.
To borrow from Amy Moffat, whether we're moving as one pulsating dance floor or singing hymns side by side to the tune of an organ, there's an inevitable feeling of togetherness—one that has the potential to cleanse the body and mind. DJs are accidental ministers, and your fellow ravers are your congregation, your community. While you may hear, see or feel something different to those that surround you, you’re united by a belief, and a faith of sorts, that music and movement is the answer.
And yet PMAD isn't really about the music at all. There's a reason why we've been told, 'PMAD is the only place I've ever felt free,' or more powerfully still, 'PMAD has made me free,' and it's not down to us. PMAD is all about the people and human connection. It's a space where you can dance, dress, think and love how you want to, and be who you truly are. As artists and partygoers, we're forced to realise there's something to this movement that's more powerful than any one of us.
